Structured Literacy

Our new entrant and Year 1/2/3 students are taught using the BSLA (Better Start to Literacy Approach) and 'Heggerty' program.
Year 4/5/6 students are taught spelling using 'The Code'. These programs support the development of literacy skills in our school.

Reading Recovery

Reading recovery is an asset for our 5.5 - 7 year old students who need extra support with literacy. Our trained reading recovery kaiako works one-to one on a daily basis. We see the best results from students who have regular attendance.

Toe-by-Toe

The Toe-by-Toe program is for our Year 4/5/6 students who need extra support with their literacy skills, including specific work with phonics. Our trained Toe-by-Toe kaiako works one-to one on a daily basis. We see the best results from students who have regular attendance.

Year 5 and 6 Camp

A highlight for our Year 5 & 6 students is their annual camp in Term 4. Our usual location is Marsden Bay Christian Camp in Ruakaka.
Students have the opportunity to experience a range of fun activities - the waterslide and flying fox are the most popular. All activities are a challenge by choice.

Noho Marae

Each year in Term 1, our Year 4/5/6 students enjoy an authentic experience at Otamatea marae in Maungaturoto.
We focus on local tikanga and using te reo Māori throughout our overnight stay.
Our new entrant and Year 1/2/3 students enjoy a day trip to one of our three local marae.

Student Wellbeing

We run specialist art classes where small groups of students are taken through a creative process to support their wellbeing.

Our specialist equine facilitator runs the horsemanship program in Waipu during Term 1 and 4.
Selected students learn to connect with horses which fosters wellbeing, relationships and emotional regulation.

Private piano lessons are offered to students. These run during the school day. Contact the school for more information.
